To discuss

  1. Why do you think Jesus Christ requires us to make covenants to receive His greatest blessings?
  2. How has your life been blessed by making and keeping covenants?
  3. How does the idea of trust interplay with covenants?
The Holy Covenants · Anthony Sweat

There is a protective power in a covenant to remind and guide us, to bind and hold us, and to stabilize and moralize us.

Touching on covenants, author David Brooks wrote, “Commitment is falling in love with something and then building a structure of behavior around it for the moment when love falters.”

Without the structure of covenant commitment, it becomes increasingly difficult to hold love together against forces that, like entropy, naturally want to tear it apart.

We commit to God by covenant now knowing that moments of weakness will come that may tempt us later.

“Covenants are pledges or vows that guarantee the future behavior of the participant.” — Elder and Sister Renlund

Our covenants protect us against a tempted version of ourselves.

We shouldn’t listen to our emotions, but to our convictions.

Prone to wander, Lord I feel it;
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it;
Seal it for thy courts above.

Covenants bind and seal us to righteous patterns of behavior precisely because our later desires may betray us. They protect us against our own instability.

“Why the Covenant Path” · Elder D. Todd Christofferson

What is the covenant path? It is the one path that leads to the celestial kingdom of God. … In the course of the covenant path (which, by the way, extends beyond mortality), we receive all the ordinances and covenants pertaining to salvation and exaltation.

Our overarching covenant commitment is to do God’s will “and to be obedient to his commandments in all things that he shall command us” [Mosiah 5:5]. …

… The covenants God offers to His children do more than guide us. They bind us to Him, and, bound to Him, we can overcome all things. …

… God provides an almost incomprehensible gift to help covenant-makers be covenant-keepers: the gift of the Holy Ghost. This gift is the right to the constant companionship, protection, and guidance of the Holy Spirit. …

On the covenant path we also find the essential blessings of forgiveness and cleansing from sin. …

Finally, it is only in pursuing the covenant path that we inherit the blessings of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the ultimate blessings of salvation and exaltation that only God can give.
